The proper term for a deep cleaning is called scaling and root planning. This is a two part cleaning. Scaling is when we use special instruments to go below the gum line to remove the plaque and tarter that has hardened over time. Root planning is when we smooth the root surface so that the gums adhere back to the root of the tooth properly. Over time with proper care and maintenance some patients are able to transfer to standard cleanings again.
