Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of the tooth has been affected by decay, infection or in some cases trauma to the tooth.
During the root canal procedure the pulp chamber is accessed and the nerve of the tooth is taken out. There are special instruments that are used to clean out any active decay and bacteria from the tooth. The open space that has been created from the root canal procedure is then filled with specific medicated dental material, the tooth is then shaped and restored to its full function.
It is important to remember that after root canal treatment you will need to follow up with your dentist to have a crown placed on the tooth. After treatment and the nerve is removed the tooth can become very brittle and may break if the crown is not placed to protect the restoration.
